Reversible and Irreversible Changes In The Outside World

Today we were thinking about reversible and irreversible changes in foods and other materials such as clay.

If we had experts in school to help us this might happen...

A chef might decide to make us a scrumptious chocolate cake. He would need flour, butter, eggs, sugar and cocoa powder. Next, he would mix the ingredients together before putting it in the oven to bake. Once the cake is baked the ingredients have become a soft sponge cake. The ingredients are now irreversible because they have been mixed together and cooked so you can't reverse the baking.

A builder showed us how to make concerete, he put a bag of cement into a cement mixer which he mixed with water and sand. When it is mixed together it comes out as a liquid which is a bit lumpy. The builder can then use the concerete to build houses, lay patios and fix walls. This is irreversible because everything is mixed together.

When adding water to cement, a chemical reaction which causes heat takes place, transforming it (changing it) and so it is an irreversible change.
