Teeth Investigation - Day 3 Observations

Today is the final day in our teeth investigation, to answer the question 'Which drink is best for our teeth?'.

Here are our final observations:

Water:
"The water has had no effect on the appearance or the shape of the egg shell." (Megan)

Orange Juice:
"The orange juice smelt really bad and the egg shell has started to crumble away from the membrane." (Caiden)

Coke:
"The colour of the egg shell has changed lighter on the inner part. On the outside it is starting to peel away from the membrane."

Class Conclusions:
Water is the healthiest for our teeth. As a class, we are surprised that the orange juice seemed to be worse for our teeth than the coke. Upon close inspection of the type of coke we used, it is clear that this is a 'sugar free' variety. We have therefore decided to extend our investigation into next week, to find out the difference between sugar free coke and full sugar coke.
Furthermore, when we looked closely at the sugar content of the orange juice, we found that it is, per 150ml, 15.8g of sugar. This is why we believe that it was the most damaging to the egg shell.
We have proved that sugar is bad for the teeth and makes cavities. We know this because the high sugar drink was the most damaging on the egg shells, through the observations we made.

  1. This was great fun and I was surprised that the Orange Juice was worse than the coke. A fun lesson.
