Teeth Investigation - Day 1 Observations

Here are the latest photographs from the Red Group's eggs in our investigation, in which we are making observations about the effect of different drinks on teeth. All five table groups have seen very similar results so far. Here are some of the observations that we have made...

Milk
"The milk has changed in texture overnight. Both the egg shell and the milk have started to go crumbly on the bottom of the egg shell. I think this has happened because the milk has started to go off..." (Neve)

The class were very interested to find out where yoghurt and cheese came from at this point!

Orange Juice
"On the egg shell half of the shell is is starting to peel away." (McKenzie)
"I think that this could be because there is an ingredient in the orange juice which has made this happen." (Harry)

Water
"The egg has pretty much stayed the same - there are small bubbles outside of the shell from the water." (Amelia)
Mrs D - Where are the bubbles coming from?
"Bubbles could be coming from the bacteria in the water." (William)

Coke
"Some of the egg has gone rotten - this is because the coke has a lot of sugar in and it has started to break up the egg shell." (Kacey)
Mrs D - how can we relate this to our teeth?
"If you drink too much this will make plaque and if you have too much plaque this will make holes." (Sean)
Mrs D - What are the holes called?
"Cavities." (Sean)

We have also learned a new scientific word - membrane - the inside 'skin' inside the egg.
