This afternoon, we've had a great time learning important first aid skills with St John Ambulance. In an emergency we would always try to get help from a trusted adult. We think this information is really important and wanted to share it with you:
I.C.E
This stands for 'In Case of Emergency' and it is an emergency contact group on your mobile phones. If you add the phone numbers of your important family and friends, emergency services and rescue workers can contact them in an emergency - even if your phone is locked!
This is really important as they can find out important information about you like your name, personal details and medical conditions and allergies. This could save your life so make sure you have I.C.E contacts in your phone!
Stings
If someone is stung:
Remove the sting. Brush or scrape it out with something flat like a ruler or bank card.
Don't use tweezers as this this could squeeze more poison into the person.
Put an ice pack on the sting to reduce the swelling and pain.
Raise the part of the body stung.
Check they are breathing normally.
Ask if this has happened before as they might have medicine to use.
If they are not breathing normally, call 999.
Choking
Ask the person if they are choking (if they are they won't be able to speak but may nod).
Tell them to stand up and cough it out.
If that doesn't work, slap it out with up to 5 slaps on their back.
Check their mouth.
If they are still choking, squeeze it out by holding them around their stomach (below ribs but above belly button). A doctor must check them over if you have to do this.
Call 999 if they are still choking.
Seizure
A person who is having a seizure might be shaking, twitching, unresponsive and have a fever.
Don't stop them shaking. Remove any dangerous, sharp or hard things from around them andpad around them so they don't hurt themselves.
Ring 999 for help.
